Elite Associates began its life in the bustling, though sometimes a little grey, city of London, England. You may well have heard of it. Since its inception, Elite has grown to become an industry leader in luxury recruitment, and in 2014 we opened up our doors in another city with equally bustling streets. NYC is our North American home, and it’s safe to say the weather is a lot more distinct in its seasons and far less grey than what we see across the Atlantic. As we grow our presence in the US of A, we felt it only right to acknowledge the hard work of our sister office and those that keep us ticking overseas. So, when Melissa made a trip to London we made sure to take up a few minutes of her time to find out about her and the journey that led her to become part of Team Elite – and pick her brain for NYC recommendations of course!
Melissa is a New York state native, and she definitely has an east coast style about her. This was her first visit to London HQ and it’s safe to say her smiley and open disposition was more than well received. Having joined the company in May, her background is not actually one of recruiting, but as her recent promotion would suggest she’s taken to it like a fish in water; moving from resourcer to recruiting consultant in less than six months. Mel advised us that before arriving at Elite, she had been working in retail and that her favourite aspect of working in store was definitely the people and having that personal touch, stating that she: “really enjoyed romancing the customers, and getting to know their needs.” This understanding is equally crucial to her present role and something that she’s been glad to be able to continue building upon. “It’s great getting to know candidates, as you get in touch for updates you end up finding out how their week is going and you really want the best results for them.” Much like working in store, having a great sense of perspective when liaising with candidates, and clients, is definitely a strength within recruitment.
Prior to her time in retail, Mel had spent a period living in California (somewhere even more removed from the London grey) where she had worked in accounting. It was this combination of administrative skills, customer insight and retail savvy that made her the perfect choice for our in-house recruiter Stephanie. “Steph reached out to me on LinkedIn, and after that, it all happened pretty fast.” Keen for something new, Mel went through the interview process and was quickly offered a position in our New York office. Nor did it take her long to get in the recruitment swing on things. When we asked what had appealed to her about the position, she flattered us by referring to the company’s London base, though maybe she just knows how to win a good review! As well as the pace, diversity and people that come part and parcel with life in the Big Apple, and who can blame her.
Finally, we asked her where she likes to spend her time when she’s not in the office. Recommendations as follow:
- Take a break and head to Central Park – it’s a landmark for a reason.
- Lunch date? Go and sample Westville and their organic menu.
- Get your drinks and indie tunes! Rockwood Music Hall is Melissa’s favourite.
